Raul es la variante de la forma francesa de Radulf: Raoul. Es un nombre germánico compuesto de rat, "consejo, consejero", y wulf, "lobo" (metafóricamente guerrero arrojado). La traducción de Radulf es "el consejo del lobo" o "el consejo del guerrero arrojado". Raul debe su popularidad francesa al Cantar de Gesta de Raoul de Cambrai (1130).
